“Eleven titles for a full success: inspired by Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Cuban rhythms, swing and also timeless ballades, the songs composed by Philippe Manca for Jack et le Haricot Magique are potential hits which delight the children and remind their parents of the good old days.”

Produced by Philippe Manca, this CD puts together all the songs of the show which illustrate the whole story specially and fitted for an audio-medium.

1. Jack et le haricot magique - Jack and the magic bean

Jack and the magic bean is the generic song which each time hits those who listen it for the first time. It’s a pop-rock song of English inspiration and its first words are a nod in the direction of Freddie Mercury.

2. Rock Symbol

Rock Symbol represents a title in the tradition of the first albums by AC/DC or Queen. This song puts the spotlight on Johnny Rooster, the cock of the farm, a square and megalo hard-rock singer. In the show, no half measures, all clichés are used: motor-bike (in fact a customized moped), leather, fans (hysterical hens), signing of autographs etc.

3. Ainsi va la vie - As life goes on

As life goes on is one of the most touching songs of the show. The father has just died leaving Jack and his mother without means of living. This superb tune sung by Jack’s mother to her son becomes a tender and heartrending song of hope.

Mi querida or Rasputin’s song, the Spanish cow. It has been inspired by the Cuban standards of the early sixties popularized among others by Trini Lopez: a simple and lively melody which quickly turns on haunting. Adult people will smile at the evocation of Ennio Morricone when the cow reminds her past life as a film actress with Sergio Leone. Also a nod to the Che in begging young people by all means to cultivate one’s mind “los jovenes (…) hay que estudiar de todas todas”.

5. L’Echange - The Trade

Sung by the Pianist and Jack while bartering the cow against a handful of beans. This song is sort of a medley ranging from gospel to rock-opera in the way of Tommy of the Who.

6. Des mots pour te bercer - Some words to rock you

Some words to rock you, even taken out of the context of the story, it is a ballade expressing the tribute paid by all the fathers of the world to their sons. Deliberately written without arrangements Some words to rock you staging Jack’s late father through the dreams of his son builds a moment of strong intimacy.

7. Je suis sa femme - I am his wife

I am his wife is one of the most intense passages of this story, sung by the ogre’s wife (the giant) who tries to help Jack run away from the castle; her song covers easily the low and high registers just in the way of a high powered Tina Turner.

8. Dès que minuit sonne - On the stroke of midnight

An amazing swing carried out by the crazy spiders of the ogre’s castle; which spiders claming wrongly to dance a Charleston. This festive moment which eases the disquieting atmosphere of the castle and reassures Jack and the audience is a nod in the direction of Duke Ellington’s swing/jungle musicals, with a touch of rock and roll.

9. L’Ogre - The Ogre

The Ogre is sort of a “heavy metal” song for supervillains. As they are generally fond of being frightened, children like this sort of character but, paradoxically being sung by a lyric baritone, the fears inspired at the beginning by the player, very quickly give way to laughs insomuch as the latter appears stupid and ridiculous.

10. Chapitre 17 - Chapter 17

Chapter 17 takes place between Jack’s two trips from the farm to the castle. This song stages the Pianist, Jack, his mother, the narrator and also the ogre who shows in this passage a more human side of his nature in displaying his paranoiac weaknesses of character. Its uncommon structure makes it sort of a small five-minutes-opera.

11. Jack et le haricot magique (final) - Jack and the magic bean - final

Repeat of the melody of the first title performed by the Pianist and all the children and concludes cheerfully this story.
